Michigan's Diabetic Coalition

Diabetic Coalition to Start Screenings

The coalition the MOA has established with the Michigan Lion’s Clubs and the Michigan Department of Public Health is now done with their planning and will start some diabetic retinopathy screenings in select areas of the state. Dates and locations are being finalized in the Detroit and Grand Rapids areas as pilot project areas. When approached, please sign up for the screening in your area.

Because diabetic retinopathy screenings require adequate dilation, most of the screenings will occur in the office or in a clinic setting. Because almost half of all diabetics do not obtain an annual eye exam, this program will greatly reduce the incidence of the most blinding of all adult eye diseases. The coalition has received some generous funding, and therefore cost should not be a barrier to anyone who needs access to these services. Participating doctors will normally not be asked to perform free services.

Dr. Mark Swan, Dr. Lillian Thorp, and Dr. Eddie Stein have graciously served on this committee for the last year. They have also developed a new diabetic reporting form that has been eagerly embraced by the primary care physicians as being simpler and more uniform. Please consider using the new form instead of your own unique form to decrease misunderstanding in the medical community. The form is available in a *.pdf or Word format for you to place your own letterhead upon – please contact Dr. Swan at swanm@ferris.edu for a form.
