LANSING, Mich. – (July 24, 2009) – The American Optometric Association (AOA) has recognized Michigan Optometric Association (MOA) member Lillian T. Kalaczinski, O.D., as the Young Optometrist of the Year.
Each year, the AOA nationally recognizes one doctor of optometry in active practice of less than ten years who shows remarkable leadership skills when serving his or her profession, patients and community. Dr. Kalaczinski earned this award for her dedication to the field of optometry and her passion to provide eye care to patients who might otherwise not have access to it.
In 2005, she helped to expand the Vision Clinic at Cherry Street Health Services – one of the Midwest’s largest federally qualified community health centers – in Grand Rapids. Currently, Dr. Kalaczinski works as the only full-time optometrist at the clinic and helps obtain funding through community partners and grant writing.
Since her arrival at Cherry Street, capacity within the Vision Clinic has tripled. In 2008, she examined more than 2,600 patients who otherwise would not have had access to eye care.
In 1998, Dr. Kalaczinski graduated from the Michigan College of Optometry at Ferris State University, where she was the recipient of numerous awards including the Senior Research Paper of the Year and the VanderLaan Student Leadership Award. She remains a clinical instructor for her alma mater
Dr. Kalaczinski completed a residency at Illinois College of Optometry, during which she had clinical and laboratory teaching responsibilities.
In addition, Dr. Kalaczinski is a member of the AOA Community Health Center Committee, the American Public Health Association and has also taken an active role in the MOA. She is currently the MOA vice president and also serves on multiple committees.
Dr. Kalaczinski is celebrating her honor with her husband Dave and their two children, Roman and Dean.
